Exchange Programme between the University of ÉäÒùʪ and the University of the Western Cape
August -December 2011 Fall semester
Firstly, I would like to thank the University of ÉäÒùʪ for the opportunity provided by the Henry Mitchelle Scholarship as well as Ms Debra Lamson and Prof Jan Persens (University of the Western Cape), Mr Currey and Proff Uphoff (University of ÉäÒùʪ) for all the guidance and help given to me throughout the planning , travel and my stay at the University.
When applying for the scholarship, the information provided about what one would need to be considered was quite clear and easy to understand. Ms Lamson was also extremely helpful; spending hours of her time corresponding with both Mr Currey and Proff Uphoff to make sure that I have no difficulty on arrival in ÉäÒùʪ.
I had absolutely no problem when flying over to the states and on arrival, as Mr Currey promised some one was there to collect me and take me back to the University as well as show me where I was going to be staying the duration of the trip. I was placed in Defoe Graham, which housed most of the international students.
When arriving at the University everybody was extremely nice and welcoming, I felt right at home from the very beginning. I also had the opportunity to meet some amazing people from various countries, who also stayed in the same residential hall as I did.
As and international student I needed to be registered for at least 12 credit hours which registered one for four classes .I, however, registered for 14 credit hours and therefore I took 5 classes. The teaching method was exactly the same as at The University of The Western Cape so it was not difficult to adjust to. Their lecturer halls are also not any different to ours.
When it came to exams and tests , the same criteria was followed as it would have been done at UWC , so again , there was no adjustment needed, which made it really easy to concentrate and listen during lectures without being distracted.
While on my trip, I was able to travel to California along with friends that I had met. This had to be one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had and without the opportunity provided by the scholarship I would have never been able to see the places I had seen.
I would recommend applying to this scholarship to many of my friends as it is a great study, cultural and overall life experience.one is also exposed to the way others live around the world. I hope that others who receive this scholarship have an amazing time, just as I did.
Again I would like to thank all those involved in the scholarship provided, it truly was a life changing experience and I grew as a person as I had to deal with a lot of issues on my own without the help of my parents which was a great learning experience.
I would like to mention that, now on arrival back at the University of the Western Cape I have had some difficulty with transferring my credit but with the help of Dr Bassett and Mrs Titus (SRES) hopefully I will be credited soon and be able to register for my third year classes in order for me to complete my degree .
Thank you, Lynne Reagon
